Across ancient civilizations, fire was both
a survival tool and a profound symbol of life,
transformation, and divinity. Then as now, fire
embodies the cyclical nature of existence,
creation, and destruction, connecting humanity
with the natural world, ancestral heritage, and
the eternal balance of the universe. Fire was also
a medium of artistic expression; prehistoric people
used it to carve into stone, and its flickering light
created ephemeral shadows, offering an unrepeatable and mesmerizing visual experience.
Berlin-based, Australian photographer Trevor
Lloyd Morgan explores these connections in his
latest series, exhibited at artloft.berlin. Morgan’s
practice reflects a deep environmental consciousness, often captured in moonlit and firelit compositions. Through his lens, fire becomes a poignant
metaphor for transformation, community, and
ecological interplay.
By crumpling and tearing the prints, Morgan
removes the precise lines of traditional photography, transforming them into sculptural objects.
This act evokes the crumpled paper as fuel for the
fire, linking the artwork to its consuming,

reshaping force. Printed works are presented
alongside Hearth, a traveling installation that
simulates a custodial fire and reflects fire’s
universal role in forging connections across time
and place.
In the artist’s words: “Fire shapes ecosystems as
an agent of destruction, renewal, and change. It
plays a central role in our identity—woven into our
landscape, intrinsic to community, and a force that
demands our respect. Despite our attempts to
contain it, fire remains a living entity. It generates
community, sparks creation, and reminds us of our
shared vulnerability. The belief that we can truly
control it is nothing more than an illusion.”
